|
| Ooops, I guess I asked my whole question in the subject line! What do you think? I know it's actually *happening* but are certain groups making more of it than necessary to stir people up? |

Well, I really don't know on this one.
What does concern me is that we tend to raid the planet as if we have full ownership.
The damage that this causes, may actually contribute to our downfall quicker than global warming, if we don't stop being so greedy.
We cause errosion, strip land bare, alter the rainfall. All kinds of stuff that people think don't affect them, until it hits big time. And I really believe that it will.
I'm a firm believer that mother nature is in charge and we can be as arrogant as we want, but she'll still give us a good hiding every now and again to put us in our place.
I don't believe this purely out of ideals either. I've come up against her a couple of times and believe me she wins, hands down. |

Have you heard of the Fermi Paradox? The universe, if we calculate correctly, should be teeming with life - assuming that planets like Earth could support it, and that it would develop there. So where is it all? This is the Fermi Paradox.
One of the answers to the paradox is the theory that as intelligent life develops, so it ends up annihilating itself, as life developed in the first place due to pressure of competition. So warfare, pollution, messing up the environment, and pop! Out life goes again, with a bang and a whimper. Awful thought, innit?
There could be solutions to these problems though. And perhaps the other life in t'universe is just too far away to say hi. |

No, I hadn't heard of it, but will be definitely giving it a bit of a google.
The resulting actions of competition seem to make sense to me though. |

Of course it's real. the only scientists who say otherwise have the credibility if side show hawkers and a pocketful of oil money. I am amazed how well the petrolium lobby manage to through doubt on it as a scientific body of evidence. It's worse that all the bruhaha around 'creation science' which hasn;t a single scientific aspect to it and is a statement of absolute faith just as much as the anti-warming rubbish.

Yes - there's no doubt about it - global warming is a reality.
The scary thing is, it's effects may even be masked by the phenomenon of global dimming. So it could be even worse than we think. |

I believe it is real but I also believe the damage is already done. I can't see people stopping what they are doing now, especially those that commute or those that have those big factories. |

I find it a shame that the population in general has lost it's respect for the planet.
Perhaps it's the focus on 'ownership' that has caused it, I just don't know.
But I do find lots of pleasure in trying to put something back rather than just taking stuff out. I don't know why really.
I've got an acre of land and don't use any chemicals on it to maintain it. I just use sheep, goats and birds to fertilize it and deep rooted vegetation.
It's great to see all the different types of grasses and stuff. And wonderful to see land come back when it was stripped bare of minerals before.
Guess it seems a little odd to most folk. |

I don't really - it's very hard to grow anything edible with goats around
Bob got the strawberries and leeks last week.
I took it quite well.
The potatoes and toms are surviving up to press.
It's just what I do. How I live.
Sometimes people tend to focus on asking "Why?"
Why do I keep goats, why do I have the birds. I tend to get a lot of whys.
It's a bit like me saying "Why do you have a DVD player. Why do you go bowling. Why do you clean your car all the time."
It's just a lifestyle like anybody else has. My money and energies just go into different stuff.
I'm feeling very hippie-like after answering this post |

Sorry if I appeared to be asking a lot of "whys". Your life sounds really interesting - I quite envy you.
Yes - when ppl live a very conventional life, they don't expect to be asked "why". And yet if you do something which is supposedly outside the norm, ppl seem to demand an explananation.
I've never aspired to be normal myself. |

| Global warming makes sense, because sometimes, depending on where you are living you can either feel the heat trapped in the atmosphere or see the smog that's if you don't smell it in some areas. The ozone depletion was said to be a hoax but now there is proof that the ozone around Alaska has a hole in it after taking all those measures. So, everyone is working on the means that will reduce the greenhouse effect, while at the same time life has to go on, but good results are in the making; hydrogen fuel, hybrids, electric cars, safer nuclear plants, etc. |
