I tend to think of 1989 as the year that environmentalism was suddenly hip again. All very high-tech of course - scientific studies about the greenhouse effect, depletion of the ozone layer, expensive solar panels, fancy fuel efficient cars... Back in the 60s it was much simpler: peace, love, weed, and tree-hugging!
I wonder if hippie parents are more likely to have kids who are sensitive about the environment? I guess all kids learn about it in school, though - recycling etc. |

Well I've just been reading a book that TH recommended.
Alternative England and Wales.
I am absolutely stunned to read things in there that we think we are so original about today.
The book was actually published in 1975
It's got more ideas in it about self sufficiency and environmentalism than we actually find in books today.
Admittedly some of the stuff is not environmentally friendly because we know more now about the problems - but believe me the stuff in there is absolutely surprising. |
