I got a good laugh out of Ted Kennedy, one of the loudest (and largest) Liberals here in the US demanding that a wind farm NOT be placed near his home - it'd destroy his beautiful view of the sea!

what a hypocrite!

it's funny how politicians are always for things when it doesn't have any effect on them...

Yes, like sending poor people's kids off to war instead of their own. For example, I doubt if Tony Blair would have wanted his son fighting in Iraq.

Actually, there was a very interesting programme on here just last night.

It was about Chernobyl and the after effects of the melt down.
What it showed, was that only 47 people died as a direct result of radiation poisoning.
There is evidence to suggest that low amounts of radiation actually trigger the gene that prevent cancer.

The previous assumptions on the effects of low level absorbtion had never been tested and they had only been guess work. They were able to use Chernobyl as a testing ground for the first time.

Yes - I video-ed this and have part watched it. I must get round to watching the rest.

Well, I'm big on alternative energy, but wouldn't want to live next to a wind turbine. I honestly don't think many people would.

It's not because of the view issues that I would have problems. Apparently they are supposed to whirr a lot and give a lot of flicker when the sun gets behind them.

It's be like Chinese water torture!

Also, the companies that are making them are in it for a profit...are they playing on the good will of people, whilst knowing the turbines are not that effective?

I'd like to know what you think of the programme when you've watched it TH?

I got annoyed by the oppostion to wind turbines in rural Britain. I understand that some areas have a traditional appearance celebrated in famous poetry and art--but scarificing a few scenic hills to avoid poisoning the very ecosystem you like to look at seems worth the sacrifce to me.

Did you actually live near one when you were in the UK then, rattitude?

Thing is, you can understand people in rural areas getting fed up. They are planning to fill the western isles of Scotland with them - and then pipe the electricity back to the south!

Why don't they just subsidise individual property turbines. Then each home could have one on their roof, like a satellite dish.

There, you see. Job sorted.

And I'm not joking about the manure, TH! The heat that the stuff generates. It's killing me to pay for electricity Laughing

I was thinking of the Downs turbine. But I am not surprised that once again England is shoving the costs North while keeping the profits.

I was only there as a foreigner but the attitudes towards Scotland that I saw during my time there began to even piss *me* off.

My real guiding policy is that things should be done locally. In NZ I was in a single suburb that was partly powered by one experiemtnal turbine up on the hill. Everyone was so proud of it. But years later they never went any further with it.

I think things should be more localised.

They are talking about covering Lewis in the things, but the islanders will not be using any of it!

I honestly don't think people are too bothered about the scenic aspects up here, it is the other stuff that worry them, noise and flicker, predominately.

It will be interesting to see how my neighbour gets on. But I'm still dubious as to the actual power he will get from it. They say 1kw, but is that per hour or per day?

Sorry to hear about your electricity bill problems!

Yes, individual turbines are a great idea, as are individual solar panels up on roofs.

Did you manage to get round to watching that Horizon programme on nuclear power, TH?

I'd like to know what somebody else thinks about it.

solar power is still grossly underused, imo... and now the wind farms are just not pretty to the eye!

Oh no, TH!

I wanted to know what you thought.

I think solar would be more popular, if they concentrated less on producing hot water and more on hot water than ran central heating systems.

For the amount of hot water I use it's just not even vaguely viable to consider installing.

Currently there is wind in most locations afr more often than there is sun, though. And solar panels are coming down in price but still pretty high.

I suppose that in either case you end up depending on batteries a lot.

I just meant that the NAMBY syndrome is good here - if it's not pleasing to the eye, then don't put it up, even if it helps!

like Ted Kennedy not wantign a wind farm near his home - ruins the view, he says... and he's left!

Would you mind to mention some of the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear power? If the lives of man are in danger because of nuclear power, why they can't simply stopped it?
