So we are meant to eat local, which means eating seasonally. It would help if a great diversity of crops was grown here--it's mostly corn and soy for making pig feed.

But I got hold of some good corn today and grilled it on the barbeque and it reminded me of the point of it all. It was the best tasting thing I've eaten in months--fresh, sweet.

So what's the best local food where you all are?

We can get really nice soft fruits up here, but they aren't in season just yet.

I have some blackberry bushes at the top of my field and I keep going up to check on them.

Bet the birds beat me to it!

They do tend to. They even eat many of the berries before we would call them ripe. I had to put mosquito netting over part of the cherry tree just to get any!

How about netting your blackberry bushes, Dolly? Those birds can be pesky little things.

Local produce? Usual veg: onions, carrots, broccoli, parsnip, spring onion, turnip/swede (there seems to be some disagreement over what it's called - what I call turnip, my partner insists is swede).

I can't, they are on the other side of the fencing, so actually face onto a track. Somebody is bound to accuse me of trying to 'claim' them.

Let a tourist try and get their dirty mitts on them though Twisted Evil

I've been getting hungry for watermelon lately. I had some yesterday, but they don't seem to be as good as when I was a kid. Strange, huh? I just seem to remember them being sweeter and with a better texture in the past.

The best source of food for us around here is potatoes. The funny thing is they are grew locally, but we are charged as if they are imported. Makes you wonder doesn't it??

Yes, fall here in US, too. I checked out the fresh salad bar at the supermarket yesterday and although they still have watermelon and cantaloupe, they looked horrid, and the watermelon was really light colored... I'll just have to wait for next summer. Wish that stuff would freeze well! Smile
