It's pretty shocking to hear that most US citizens are without medical insurance. What on earth do you do if you get ill?
In the UK people just tend to take for granted the fact that we do not have to pay. I had an operation last year, and did not pay a penny. |

I never realised that millions didn't have insurance either.
It does seem a bit draconian.
Mind you, if we lose the NHS, I guess that's what it'll be like here. |

Yes, that's what worries me. There is a tendency towards creeping privatisation, encouraged and orchestrated by the World Trade Organisation.
A good book to read is "The Captive State" by George Monbiot. Though I think I'd extend it to "The Captive World". |

Ooh, TH, you can borrow my copy if you want
I agree with him on a lot of issues, not all of them mind. He still does a good column in The Guardian, but I read it online, cos I don't have a paper! |

Yes - I read the Guardian too - online nowadays. Except I've got a bit lazy about following current events at the moment. Probably due to despair! <throws hands up in air>
Still - you never know - might get me groove back. |

| The problem is with columns such as his, you start to read something and pick up on it and then before you know it you are knee deep in trying to find out further info on the issues! |

Yes - it really takes a lot of time and effort to be well-informed. That's why most people aren't.
Also, it can depend on where you live, and how much news, particularly international news, that is made available.
Because most people don't really have time to do copious reading, they tend to rely on the tabloids, which don't, imo, give a balanced view. |

I wouldn't be looking to Canada as a way to do socialized health care - you can wait months for the simplest treatment and die wwaiting for cancer care!
Hillary won't get it because the Dems are so far to the left that they dont' know what they want - other than a reality shift!

Thumperfive - "The dems" are a huge group of people, both left and not. You can't categorize the party with a broad brush stroke.
No more than I can say "The Republicans don't care about healthcare or taking care of babies once they are born. They only want to ban abortions and make sure there are no civil unions or marriages between gays."
That would be a general statment, and unfair to make. |

I've only just started to understand about US politics and didn't realise they were so definitively divided with regard to their beliefs.
I really don't think that the parties are so divided in their policies here in the UK, sometimes I wish they were.
I've seen Blair being described as Liberal a lot recently. Trouble is I can only equate his liberal mindedness to other cultures and people. It doesn't seem to apply to the Brits. We are drowing in legislation and rules! |

John McCain - great guy, war vet (with real medals!) and looking decent.
tho Joe Lieberman is a good fellow as well, if the Dems don't knife him in the back.
and I wuv John Edwards... he got screwed over by Kerry, but I think he may have a comeback going! |

| IMHO it would help if we got a little more coverage of other American politicians rather than just Presidents, ex-Presidents, ex-Presidents wife and the represenative for your state in the media over and over. Part of getting better leaders is having the grass roots party know their options. |

| I wasn't going to touch this thread with a 50 ft. pole because there's always so much disagreement when politics comes up. BUT I'll just say that I happen to agree with the original poster... she scares me, too... a LOT. I can't even imagine where we'd end up as a nation. Shivers. |
