Thanks for the definition, Eerie! I hadn't come across an explicit definition of the word before. |

I concur completely with you two.
Why do some people loathe Hilary so mjch?
What has she ever done wrong? She's in a damned in you do damned if you don't position - being married to Bill Clinton - who was one of the best presidents the US ever had - doesn't help her one bit. |

You're welcome. That's why, reading posters who support BUSH - makes no sense to me. Hippies would not - could not - support a conservative-right wing agenda. No way. |

Although Clinton did seem to be a good president even on this side of the water, I don't think the Monica incident did his historical reputation much good, did it?
As daft as it sounds it's what a lot of people remember him for. And lying through his teeth didn't help. |

| I do not see being a hippy as being primarily about being on the political left--although I am a socialist myself. I see it more as being for the social and enviropnmental good including being green, pacifist, anti-prejudice and socially active. A hippy can be atheist or religious and even (shock) vote Republican if that seems like the best overall choice to make (i.e. to support a local council member who will prevent damaging local developments or support socially positive change. I think it is good to say what being hippy is, not tell people they cannot be one for *any* reason. |

Well from what I now understand about it, I can't see that a hippies beliefs would be compatible with the republican manifesto. I can, though understand how if you had a local republican who was fighting a specific cause then a hippy would vote for him.
Trouble is, I can't see a republican fighting a cause a hippy would believe in in the first place

It's funny how interests can align (especially in the US IMHO) -- like fundementalist Christians and old-style feminists both trying to get rid of a local sex toys/porn shop.
Often local issue are all you can go on if you are voting for someone in a major party. I look at council levvel politics, urban development, schools and social programs under town and county control.
On the broader scale I am not pro-Democrat but I see them as being less damaging especially on environmental policies like Kyoto and Alaskan oil.
It's that same old choice -- the marginally less evil of two options or voting for someone without even the faintest hopes of getting in. |

My last post read like garbage.
I should have put republican instead of democrat.
I'll go see if I can edit.
I know what you mean though, Rattitude! |

| on the whole Hilary thing, I'm more afraid of what she'd do to the military if she ever came into the position. I'm a military family, our lives depend on that military pay check and she's already made it clear she doesn't like the military in one of her speeches. So for those of us that may not agree with everything, we do not want to have our spouses lose their jobs. |

Would it be a vote getter for her though?
In light of all the money that has been spent on the war, I mean. |

I think Hilary is a well-rounded person.
The whole thing about military is that Republicans are big on defense, and Dems are big on programs like Headstart, WIC and trying to solve the medical insurance problem.
As long as there is congress, there will never be too much control by one party. |

What's happening with medical insurance, Eerie.
Governments are too keen on free services, like we have over here. They see it as water down the drain.
Mind you it does come in handy when unemployment figures rise. You just put some more people into the national health service. |

Here in the US ............... you have to have private medical insurance. Sometimes, if you are lucky, you can get it through your job, but usually, middle class and lower middle class people go without medical insurance.
If you are dirt poor, there is some state coverage.
Millions of US citizens are without medical insurance. |

Are the liberals going for a broader state scheme then?
How popular would that be with the voters - presuming of course that it would be funded by increased taxation. |
